March 3, 2012: Scene Construction: Building a Scene Layer by Layer

This course will begin by posing the questions: what makes a scene in a piece of fiction a scene, and what must the scene accomplish? From there, we move on to uncovering the underlying framework of scene in fiction, and especially how the three main components of scene-dialogue, action, and exposition-work together to create a scene. Please come help Susan celebrate the launch of her novel, Goliath. The story is set in a small furniture factory town whose citizens are thrown into tumult by the sudden death of the factory's president. The party, held in a library that was once a Broyhill Furniture plant, will feature a brief reading and signing plus refreshments, supplied by Friends of the Library. The public is welcome to attend.
